League of Women Voters Kentucky - Annual Meeting 2024
REPORT ON THE LWV KENTUCKY
2024 ANNUAL MEETING
Our many thanks to our hosts,
LWV of Northern Kentucky!
Friday Evening's Social and Meal provided us the opportunity to meet each other
and learn a bit about this very active League.
Speakers, Mark Neikirk, former managing editor of the Cincinnati Post,
and Judith Clabes, editor and publisher of the Northern Kentucky Tribune,
provided the history of the struggle of journalists to access open records to publish abuses from individuals, legislators, and industries.
Both lamented the demise of local print media across the nation. “If we want a healthy democracy, we must have a healthy press. People are much better behaved when people are watching.” Unfortunately, due to extreme costs of printing operations, the trend of local newspapers closing operations will continue. However, the switch to online newspaper publication is filling the void. Some examples: Northern Kentucky Tribune, Kentucky Lantern, Rural Blog, and Daily Chatter. Check them out – some are free.
On Saturday, LWVKY President Jenn Jackson opened the meeting with a challenge to all members: If you had $10,000 for voter outreach, what would you do? (Please send your ideas to Jenn.) She reminded us all to check out the State League – LWVKY.org for important information and get involved! Look at the calendar for committees that you might want to join, sign up for the Outreach Circle to amplify our voice, and read through the many resources on the main page, LWVKY.org. Search the National League site – LWV.org. View the One Person, One Vote video to learn about the movement to end the Electoral College. Read the Center Spot articles, and scroll all the way down the main page to League Management, where you will find so much information!!
Dr. Shauna Reilly, Northern Kentucky University, was the featured speaker who explained the ins and outs of the Electoral College. Her slides will be posted at LWVKY.org
The business meeting continued with reports from LWVKY Board members and ended with League chapter reports and feedback from attending members. More information and slides will be posted at LWVKY.org .
